Quick facts: garden waste in Chelmsford

Brown bin garden waste collections
Since March 2025, Chelmsford City Council has collected garden waste only from households that subscribe. You pay once for the subscription year (1 March to 28 February), and the council posts you a sticker to put on your brown bin, just under the handles. Only bins with a current sticker are emptied. The council says the sticker belongs to the property, not the resident, so it can’t be moved with you, and you can cancel within 14 days of paying if no collection has yet been made.
Collections are fortnightly throughout the year. Bins that are overflowing or contaminated aren’t collected, and extra green waste left beside the bin isn’t taken. Branches, logs and stumps: what to do with each

Essex recycling centres near Chelmsford
Recycling centres in Essex are run by Essex County Council, not the city council. All require a booking for each visit (free), and you should sort your load before you arrive. Love Essex also asks visitors not to queue before opening time, to allow time to unload before closing, and warns that repeated bookings in a seven-day period may be cancelled (policy and site restrictions (opens in a new tab)).

When to let the tree surgeon take the arisings
For anything bigger than a trim, it is usually simplest to have the tree surgeon take the waste (“arisings”). A single crown reduction can produce far more than a brown bin or a car boot can handle, and most tree surgeons chip brushwood on site so it takes up much less room.
- Say what you want in the quote: everything taken away, chippings left for mulch, or logs stacked for you.
- Don’t expect them to use the tip: Essex recycling centres don’t accept business or trade waste (Love Essex (opens in a new tab)).
- Check who takes your waste: the Environment Agency keeps a public register of waste carriers (opens in a new tab). Be wary of anyone offering to “take it away” cheaply with no paperwork.

Can I take a van or trailer full of branches?
Chelmsford Recycling Centre accepts vans, pick-ups and large trailers, but you must book the van slot. South Woodham Ferrers and Witham don’t accept vans, pick-ups or large trailers. Vehicles of 3.5 tonnes or more aren’t accepted at any Essex recycling centre. If you use a hire vehicle, bring the hire agreement.
Can my tree surgeon take the waste to the tip for me?
No. Essex County Council’s recycling centres take household waste only, and business, trade and commercial waste isn’t accepted. A tree surgeon’s arisings are business waste, so they dispose of it through their own routes. You can check a waste carrier on the Environment Agency’s public register.
