Why we don’t publish prices
Plenty of sites publish “average” tree surgery prices. We don’t, because we can’t check them and they rarely match a real job. Two trees of the same height can be completely different work: one might be felled in one piece onto a lawn, the other dismantled branch by branch on ropes over a greenhouse, with every piece carried through the house. Publishing a figure would either put you off or set an expectation the tree surgeon can’t meet.
What we can do is explain what makes a job quicker or slower, so you can describe it well, understand why quotes differ, and spot a quote that leaves things out.
The main factors in any tree job

| Size and species | Height, spread and trunk diameter set how much cutting, rigging and waste there is. Hardwoods such as oak are heavier and slower to process than most softwoods. |

| Access | A narrow side passage, steps or no vehicle access means more carrying, smaller machines and more time. |
| What’s underneath | Roofs, conservatories, greenhouses, walls, fences, a road or overhead lines all slow the work and may need extra equipment or permits. |
| Condition | Dead, decayed or storm-damaged trees can be less predictable and slower to take down safely. |
| Waste | Chipping brash, cutting and removing timber, and disposing of it all is often a large part of the job. |
| Extras | Stump grinding, root removal, replanting, or ground protection on a soft lawn. |
Factors by type of job
- Tree removal: felling versus dismantling, targets underneath, whether the stump is ground out, and what happens to the timber.
- Pruning and crown reduction: how much is being removed, how many trees, and access for climbers and for moving brash to the chipper.
- Stump grinding: the number and diameter of stumps, depth needed, surface roots, gate width and whether grindings are taken away.
- Hedge trimming: length, height and width, species (conifers and laurel create bulky waste), both sides or one, and whether towers or a platform are needed.
- Emergency work: how unstable the tree is, what it is resting on, power lines, and timing during a storm backlog or out of hours.
Costs that are easy to miss
- Waste removal. Check whether brash, logs and chippings are taken away. If they are, the contractor should be a registered waste carrier (Environment Agency register (opens in a new tab)). Our garden waste guide covers doing it yourself.
- The stump. Felling usually leaves a low stump. Grinding it out is a separate item unless the quote says otherwise.
- Power lines. Work near overhead lines may need UK Power Networks to visit first (UKPN (opens in a new tab)), which can affect timing.
- Roads and pavements. Work over a road can need traffic management or permits.
- Permissions. There is no fee for a TPO application or conservation-area notice, but allow time: usually six weeks (conservation area) or eight weeks (TPO). See our TPO guide.
How to compare quotes like for like
- Same specification. Which trees, what work, and by how much (for example “reduce crown height and spread by about 2m”), not just “tidy up”.
- Same clear-up. Is everything taken away, or are logs and chippings left?
- Same stump treatment. Left, cut low, or ground out, and to what depth?
- VAT shown the same way on each quote.

- Written, dated and specific. A written quote protects you both.
Be wary of door-to-door offers to “take that tree down today” for cash, quotes that won’t go in writing, and anyone who suggests “topping” a tree or ignoring a TPO.
How to describe your job for an accurate quote
- Your postcode, and what you want to achieve (“branches off the roof”, “more light”, “remove and grind the stump”).
- Rough height compared with the house, and the tree type if you know it.
- The narrowest point of the access route, and whether there’s parking nearby.
- What’s underneath or close by: glass, sheds, fences, a road or overhead cables.
- Two or three photos: the whole tree with its surroundings, and a close-up of any problem.
- What you’d like done with the waste, and whether you want the logs.

Frequently asked questions
How much does a tree surgeon cost in Chelmsford?
We don’t publish prices, because tree work varies too much to price fairly from a web page. The same “small tree” could be a quick job in an open front garden or a full day’s dismantling over a conservatory. A written quote after the tree surgeon has seen the tree, in person or from good photos, is the only reliable figure.
Is the quote free?
Asking for a quote through this site is free and there’s no obligation to go ahead. Any price is set by the independent tree surgeon, in writing, before work starts.
Why do tree surgery quotes vary so much?
Usually because they don’t describe the same job. One quote might include taking all the waste away, stump grinding and a full clear-up; another might leave logs and brash on site. Compare the specification line by line, not just the total.
Does it cost anything to apply for work on a protected tree?
The Planning Portal says there is no fee for an application for works to trees with a TPO or a conservation-area notice (Planning Portal (opens in a new tab)). Chelmsford City Council also offers optional, paid protected tree advice before you apply (protected tree advice (opens in a new tab)).
Is VAT included in a tree surgery quote?
It depends on the business. Some tree surgeons are VAT-registered and some aren’t. Ask whether the figure on the quote includes VAT, so you can compare quotes fairly.
Can I keep the cost down?
Often, yes: clear the access route, combine several jobs in one visit, keep the logs or wood chip if you can use them, and give a flexible date. Choosing a crown reduction instead of felling isn’t always cheaper, so ask for options.
